Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, sits on the northeastern shore of New Providence Island, an outpost that has cycled through identities as a Spanish claim, a British colony, a pirate haven — the infamous Republic of Pirates flourished here from 1706 to 1718 under Blackbeard and Charles Vane — and, since 1973, the capital of an independent archipelagic nation. The pastel-coloured colonial buildings along Bay Street and the Queen's Staircase, sixty-five steps carved from solid limestone by enslaved people in the late eighteenth century, testify to a layered and complex history.

Modern Nassau marries Caribbean informality with resort glamour. Paradise Island, connected to Nassau by two bridges, is home to the sprawling Atlantis resort and its marine habitats, water slides, and casino. Yet the city's character lies more authentically in its downtown: the straw market where vendors weave palm-frond baskets, the fish fry shacks at Arawak Cay, and the colourful wooden houses climbing the hill toward Fort Charlotte. The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas, housed in a restored colonial mansion, showcases Bahamian artists in a setting of quiet elegance.

Bahamian cuisine is built on the sea. Conch — pronounced "konk" — is the national obsession, appearing as cracked conch (battered and fried), conch fritters, conch salad (a Caribbean ceviche with lime, peppers, and onions), and conch chowder. At Arawak Cay, known locally as "the Fish Fry," open-air shacks serve fried snapper, grilled lobster, and peas 'n' rice with sky juice (a sweet coconut-water cocktail with gin). Guava duff, a steamed guava dessert drizzled with rum sauce, is the traditional sweet ending.

The waters surrounding Nassau teem with marine life. Snorkelling at nearby Rose Island reveals coral gardens and nurse sharks. The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park, accessible by day trip, is one of the world's most pristine marine reserves. Blue Lagoon Island offers dolphin encounters and secluded beaches. For history, Fort Fincastle and the Pirates of Nassau Museum recreate the city's lawless golden age.

Nassau is among the Caribbean's most visited cruise ports, served by Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Royal Caribbean. The newly expanded Nassau Cruise Port features a waterfront dining and entertainment district. December through April offers the driest and most comfortable weather, but the Bahamas' tropical climate makes Nassau a year-round destination.
