Sal Rei is the capital of Boa Vista, the easternmost island of Cape Verde—an Atlantic archipelago 570 kilometers off the West African coast where the Sahara's influence meets the tropical sea. The town's name, "Salt King," recalls the era when the island's salt pans were its primary industry. Today, Sal Rei is a modest town of approximately 6,000 people whose dusty streets, colorful low-rise buildings, and unhurried pace of life reflect the Cape Verdean concept of morabeza—a term encompassing hospitality, warmth, and a generous approach to time.

The town wraps around a bay of calm, shallow water, with the uninhabited Ilhéu de Sal Rei offshore as a natural breakwater. The main square, Praça de Santa Isabel, is the social center. The music that drifts from doorways is morna, Cape Verde's signature genre—a melancholic, Portuguese-influenced ballad tradition that produced Cesária Évora.

The cuisine is rooted in the ocean. Catchupa, the national dish, is a slow-cooked stew of corn, beans, and protein. Fresh-caught tuna, wahoo, and lobster appear grilled or stewed. Grogue, a sugarcane spirit, is the foundation of ponche—a cocktail of grogue, lime juice, and honey.

Boa Vista earns its name—"Good View"—through beaches of almost absurd beauty. Praia de Santa Mónica stretches eighteen kilometers and is often entirely empty. From February through June, loggerhead sea turtles come ashore to nest—the island is one of the most important nesting sites in the Atlantic.

Sal Rei is served by Boa Vista's airport with direct European flights. The best time to visit is November through June. The turtle nesting season (February–June) adds a compelling wildlife dimension.
