Santa Marta holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving city in Colombia, founded in 1525 by the Spanish conquistador Rodrigo de Bastidas on a bay so naturally perfect that the Tairona people had settled it centuries before any European arrived. Nestled between the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta — the world’s highest coastal mountain range, whose snow-capped peaks rise to 5,775 meters just forty-two kilometers from the shoreline — and the sparkling Caribbean Sea, the city occupies one of the most dramatically situated locations in all of South America. It was here, at a hacienda just outside town, that Simón Bolívar drew his final breath in 1830, ending a life devoted to the liberation of an entire continent.

The city’s historic center, recently revitalized, is a compact grid of colonial-era buildings painted in sun-faded pastels, centered on the Parque de los Novios — a leafy plaza that transforms each evening into an open-air salon of restaurants, live music, and people-watching. The Cathedral of Santa Marta, one of the oldest in the Americas, anchors the spiritual life of the old town, while the Museo del Oro Tairona houses a stunning collection of pre-Columbian gold artifacts that illuminate the sophistication of the indigenous cultures that thrived here before the conquest. The malecón, a breezy waterfront promenade, connects the historic center to the marina and the local fishing pier, where the day’s catch arrives each morning in wooden lanchas.

Colombian Caribbean cuisine reaches its apotheosis in Santa Marta. Ceviche samario — shrimp, octopus, and fish in a citrus-coconut marinade — is the city’s signature opener, followed by arroz con coco (coconut rice), patacones, and whole fried mojarra served on a plantain leaf. Arepas de huevo — deep-fried corn pockets filled with egg — are the street-food staple, eaten standing at a corner stall with a squeeze of lime and fiery ají sauce. For the adventurous, the city’s Caribbean-Colombian fusion restaurants serve cochinillo (suckling pig), langoustines in hogao sauce, and cazuela de mariscos, a rich seafood stew that captures the generosity of the Colombian table.

The natural attractions surrounding Santa Marta are extraordinary. Tayrona National Park, a thirty-minute drive east, combines pristine Caribbean beaches with dense tropical forest and pre-Columbian archaeological sites in a setting of almost unreal beauty — boulders the size of houses frame turquoise coves where monkeys swing through the canopy overhead. The Ciudad Perdida (Lost City), a pre-Columbian settlement discovered in the jungle in 1972, predates Machu Picchu by six centuries and is accessible via a multi-day trek through the Sierra Nevada. Closer to town, the fishing village of Taganga and the beaches of Playa Blanca offer more accessible escapes.

Celebrity Cruises, Emerald Yacht Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, and Windstar Cruises all call at Santa Marta’s modern cruise terminal, located within easy walking distance of the historic center. The city serves as an ideal complement to Cartagena on Caribbean itineraries, offering a quieter, more authentic Colombian experience. The best time to visit is December through April, when the dry season brings brilliant sunshine, calm Caribbean waters, and clear views of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada rising impossibly above the tropical coast.
