Playa Mantas

On the central Pacific coast of Costa Rica, where the warm tropical waters meet a shoreline of volcanic rock and golden sand, Playa Mantas has earned its name from the magnificent manta rays that frequent its offshore waters — gentle giants whose wingspans can exceed five metres and whose graceful underwater flight is one of the great spectacles of marine life in Central America. This beach, tucked into a cove near the town of Puntarenas, offers an accessible yet unspoiled slice of Pacific Costa Rica.

The character of Playa Mantas is defined by the quality of its marine environment. The bay's rocky points create sheltered conditions that attract not only the namesake mantas but also spotted eagle rays, southern stingrays, and an abundance of tropical fish that make the snorkelling here among the best on Costa Rica's central Pacific coast. Whale sharks have been spotted during the rainy season, and pods of spinner dolphins frequently pass through the bay, their acrobatic leaps providing entertainment visible from the beach.

The surrounding area preserves the relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere of rural Pacific Costa Rica. Small fishing boats — pangas — are pulled up on the sand, and local fishermen sell their morning catch directly to beachgoers and restaurants. The unhurried rhythm of life here contrasts sharply with the resort developments further south on the Nicoya Peninsula, offering a Costa Rica that feels authentic and unpackaged.

The cuisine available near Playa Mantas is classic Tico (Costa Rican) coastal cooking. Ceviche — fresh fish "cooked" in lime juice with cilantro, onion, and sweet peppers — is the quintessential Pacific coast preparation. Arroz con mariscos — rice studded with shrimp, clam, and squid — is hearty and satisfying. Patacones — twice-fried green plantain discs — accompany nearly everything, and a cold Imperial beer or fresh coconut water completes the beach dining experience. Roadside stands called sodas serve casados — rice, beans, salad, and a protein — for prices that seem almost impossibly modest.

Playa Mantas is located near Puntarenas, approximately ninety minutes by road from San José. The area is accessible by car, bus, or as a shore excursion from cruise ships that call at Puntarenas. The dry season from December to April offers the sunniest conditions, while the rainy season (May to November) brings greener landscapes, warmer water temperatures, and the best chances for whale shark and manta ray encounters. Morning hours typically provide the calmest seas for snorkelling.
