The small Norman town of Vernon has witnessed the passage of armies and artists alike since the tenth century, when Rollo, the Viking chieftain who became the first Duke of Normandy, fortified the Seine crossing here as a frontier post between his new duchy and the Kingdom of France. The Château des Tourelles, a medieval keep straddling the remnants of a twelfth-century bridge, still stands guard over the river — its romantic silhouette, half-consumed by ivy and framed by weeping willows, has been painted and photographed countless times. Yet Vernon's greatest claim to fame lies four kilometres downstream in the village of Giverny, where Claude Monet lived and painted for forty-three years, creating the water lily garden that inspired some of the most celebrated paintings in the history of art.

Vernon itself rewards a leisurely stroll through streets that blend medieval and Renaissance architecture. The Collégiale Notre-Dame, a Gothic church whose rose window casts coloured light across worn flagstones, anchors the town centre. Half-timbered houses lean against each other along Rue Carnot, their carved beams bearing the patina of centuries. The Musée de Vernon houses a small but distinguished collection of Impressionist and post-Impressionist works, offering context for the artistic revolution that unfolded in the surrounding landscape. The Seine promenade, shaded by linden trees, provides tranquil views of the river and the old mill perched improbably on the remains of the medieval bridge.

Norman cuisine in Vernon tends toward the rustic and comforting. A proper lunch begins with a bowl of soupe à l'oignon gratinée — caramelised onions in beef broth, crowned with a raft of melted Gruyère on crusty bread. Canard à la Rouennaise, duck served in a rich blood-thickened sauce, is a speciality of the region. Apple tart — tarte aux pommes — appears on every dessert menu, often accompanied by a scoop of crème fraîche from a local dairy. The surrounding orchards produce outstanding cider and Calvados; the pommeau de Normandie, an aperitif made by blending apple juice with Calvados, deserves wider recognition. For cheese, the creamy, pungent Pont-l'Évêque pairs beautifully with a glass of the region's sparkling cider.

Giverny, of course, is the principal excursion, and Monet's house and gardens — with their Japanese bridge, wisteria-draped arbours, and the famous nymphéas (water lily) pond — remain as luminous as his paintings suggest. Beyond Giverny, the Château de Bizy, sometimes called "the Versailles of Normandy," offers formal French gardens just outside Vernon. The medieval fortress of Château Gaillard, built by Richard the Lionheart at Les Andelys in a single year (1196-1197), commands a dramatic clifftop position overlooking a great bend in the Seine. Rouen, with its cathedral, half-timbered old town, and Joan of Arc associations, lies forty-five minutes downstream.

Vernon is a key stop on Seine river cruises, served by A-ROSA, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, CroisiEurope, Emerald Cruises, Riviera Travel, Scenic River Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld River Cruises, Viking, and VIVA Cruises. Nearby river ports include Caudebec-en-Caux, Rouen, and Paris. The Seine cruising season extends from March through November, with late April through June offering the gardens of Giverny at their most resplendent — a riot of irises, poppies, and roses that would have delighted Monet himself.
