Bernkastel-Kues, the hyphenated twin town straddling the Moselle River, has been synonymous with German Riesling for over six centuries. The celebrated Bernkasteler Doctor vineyard — named, legend has it, after its wine cured the ailing Archbishop of Trier in the fourteenth century — clings to a precipitous south-facing slope directly above the town, producing wines so renowned that a single hectare once sold for a record price. The Romans planted the first vines here, but it was the medieval prince-bishops who elevated Moselle winemaking into an art, and the town's half-timbered market square, virtually unchanged since the seventeenth century, remains the most photogenic stage in this vinous theater.

The Marktplatz of Bernkastel is a masterpiece of German vernacular architecture. The Spitzhäuschen, a narrow, impossibly leaning half-timbered house from 1416 that tapers to a point, is the town's beloved mascot and one of the most photographed buildings in the Moselle Valley. Gabled houses in dove-gray, terracotta, and sage-green frame an intimate square where fountain water splashes and café umbrellas shade tables laden with Riesling glasses. Above the town, the ruined Landshut Castle — destroyed by fire in 1692 and never rebuilt — offers a steep thirty-minute climb rewarded with sweeping views of the river's sinuous loops and the patchwork of vineyards below.

Moselle wine culture permeates every aspect of life. Local Weinstuben serve Federweisser (young, still-fermenting wine) with Zwiebelkuchen (onion tart) each autumn, a seasonal ritual as beloved as it is fleeting. Year-round, the Rieslings of the Bernkasteler Doctor, Graacher Himmelreich, and Wehlener Sonnenuhr vineyards — each distinguished by the unique mineral character of its blue Devonian slate — are available for tasting in cellars throughout the old town. The cuisine complements the wine beautifully: Reibekuchen (potato pancakes) with apple compote, Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach, a Palatinate specialty that migrated up-river), and trout from the Moselle's tributaries, simply pan-fried in butter.

Day trips from Bernkastel explore the Moselle's cultural riches. Trier, the oldest city in Germany and once the northern capital of the Roman Empire, lies forty-five minutes southwest — its Porta Nigra gate, Imperial Baths, and Constantine's Basilica form a UNESCO World Heritage ensemble. Cochem, with its fairy-tale Reichsburg castle, sits forty minutes downstream. For hikers, the Moselsteig long-distance trail passes through town, with particularly scenic stages traversing the steep vineyards of the Graach and Wehlen communes.

Bernkastel is a highlight of Moselle and Rhine river cruises. A-ROSA, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Emerald Cruises, Holland America Line, Riviera Travel, Scenic River Cruises, Tauck, TUI River Cruises, Uniworld River Cruises, Viking, and VIVA Cruises all call here. Nearby stops include Cochem, Trier, and the confluence at Koblenz. The season runs from April through October, but connoisseurs favor September and October, when the grape harvest transforms the valley into a tableau of gold and amber, and wine festivals animate every village along the river.
