An hour’s train ride west of Berlin, where the Havel River widens into a series of lakes that glint among forests and meadows, Brandenburg an der Havel reveals a thousand years of German history in a setting of watery tranquility. This city of 72,000—older than Berlin itself—was the seat of the Margraviate of Brandenburg, the medieval principality that evolved into the Kingdom of Prussia and ultimately into the German Empire. Its three historic islands, connected by bridges and surrounded by a network of canals, rivers, and lakes, give Brandenburg a Venice-like character that surprises visitors expecting industrial-era austerity.

The Dom St. Peter und Paul, Brandenburg’s Romanesque-Gothic cathedral perched on the Dominsel (Cathedral Island), has anchored the city’s spiritual life since 1165. Its interior harbors medieval frescoes, a 14th-century Böhme Altar, and the Brandenburg Cathedral Museum, whose collection of medieval liturgical textiles is among Germany’s finest. The Altstadt (Old Town) island, connected by historic bridges, preserves the 15th-century Altstadtrathaus (Old Town Hall) and the Roland statue—a medieval symbol of market rights and civic freedom that has stood guard since 1474.

Brandenburg’s waterways define its contemporary character as much as its medieval monuments. The city sits at the confluence of several navigable routes, and the Beetzsee and Brätlingsee lakes offer sailing, rowing, and swimming in waters clean enough to meet EU bathing standards. The Regattastrecke Beetzsee, an Olympic-standard rowing course, has hosted world championships and continues to draw competitive rowers. For the less competitive, houseboats and canoes can be hired for explorations of the surrounding waterways, where kingfishers flash blue above lily pads and medieval church towers appear around each bend.

The culinary traditions of the Brandenburg region—the Havelland—reflect its rivers and forests. Freshwater fish dominates: Havel pike-perch (Zander), eel smoked over alder wood, and carp prepared in the traditional Silvester (New Year’s Eve) style. The region’s sandy soils produce exceptional asparagus (Beelitzer Spargel, among Germany’s most prized), and the surrounding orchards supply apples for the Apfelwein (apple wine) that is to Brandenburg what cider is to Normandy. Brandenburg’s craft brewing scene, anchored by historic breweries, produces pilsners and wheat beers that pair perfectly with the region’s hearty fare.

CroisiEurope and VIVA Cruises navigate the Havel to Brandenburg, offering river cruise guests access to a city that encapsulates the layers of German history—from medieval Slavic settlement through Prussian ascendancy to post-reunification renewal—in a setting of unusual natural beauty. The city’s compact island geography makes it supremely walkable, and the waterfront promenades invite leisurely strolling. May through September offers the warmest weather for outdoor exploration and water activities, with the asparagus season (April–June) providing a particularly delicious reason to visit.
