Freiburg im Breisgau is the sunniest city in Germany — and one of the greenest, in both the environmental and aesthetic senses. Nestled at the western edge of the Black Forest where the Rhine plain meets the foothills of the Schwarzwald, Freiburg has combined its medieval architectural heritage with a commitment to sustainable living that has made it a model city for environmental urbanism worldwide. The Vauban district, a former military barracks converted into a car-free, solar-powered neighbourhood, and the city's extensive tram network and bicycle infrastructure have earned Freiburg recognition as one of Europe's most livable cities — a distinction that complements rather than contradicts its 900 years of history.

The Munster, Freiburg's red sandstone cathedral, is one of the finest Gothic churches in Germany — its 116-metre spire, described by the Swiss art historian Jacob Burckhardt as "the most beautiful tower in Christendom," rises above the Munsterplatz market square in a composition that has defined the city's skyline since the tower's completion in 1330. The stained glass windows, many dating to the 13th and 14th centuries, include a series depicting the medieval trades and guilds that financed the cathedral's construction — bakers, cobblers, and miners rendered in luminous colour that transforms the nave into a gallery of medieval social history. The daily market at the base of the Munster, operating every morning except Sunday, sells local produce, flowers, and the Lange Rote — the long red sausage grilled on the spot and served in a crusty roll — that constitutes Freiburg's most beloved street food.

The Black Forest, beginning at Freiburg's eastern doorstep, is one of Europe's most atmospheric landscapes — a mountainous expanse of dark spruce and pine forest, river valleys, and the traditional half-timbered farmhouses whose massive hipped roofs, designed to shed heavy snowfall, define the region's architectural vernacular. The Schauinsland mountain, accessible by cable car from the southern suburbs, provides panoramic views across the Rhine plain to the Vosges Mountains in France and, on clear days, to the Swiss Alps. The Hollental (Hell Valley), a dramatic gorge carved by the Dreisam River through the Black Forest massif, begins just east of the city and leads to Titisee — a glacial lake whose dark waters and surrounding forest embody the Romantic image of the Schwarzwald that has captivated visitors since the 19th century.

The cuisine of Freiburg and the Black Forest is hearty, wood-smoke-inflected, and deeply satisfying. Schwarzwalder Schinken (Black Forest ham), smoked over spruce and fir in the traditional manner, is the region's most famous export. Schwarzwalder Kirschtorte (Black Forest cake), the chocolate-cherry-cream confection that has been adapted worldwide, finds its most authentic expression in the patisseries of Freiburg, where local kirsch (cherry brandy) and Schwarzwald cream provide the genuine ingredients. The wines of the nearby Kaiserstuhl — a volcanic hill in the Rhine plain that produces some of Baden's finest Spatburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) — are served at the Weinstuben (wine taverns) that punctuate the old town's lanes.

Freiburg is served by Emerald Cruises on Rhine river itineraries as an excursion from Breisach. The most pleasant visiting season is May through October, with the Munster market at its most abundant in summer and the Black Forest at its most atmospheric during the autumn fog season, when the valleys fill with mist and the mountain peaks emerge above the cloud layer like islands in a white sea.
