Vilshofen an der Donau, a small Bavarian town at the confluence of the Vils, Wolfach, and Pfudrach rivers with the Danube, traces its origins to a Celtic settlement and a subsequent Roman outpost on this strategic waterway. The town received its market charter in 1206, and its medieval prosperity — built on river trade, salt transport, and agriculture — is preserved in a compact old town of pastel-painted baroque houses, arcaded courtyards, and a prominent Gothic city tower (Stadtturm) that has watched over the market square for over five centuries. The devastating town fire of 1794 led to a baroque reconstruction that gives Vilshofen its present character — a harmonious ensemble of cream, ochre, and powder-blue facades that catch the Bavarian sunlight with quiet beauty.

Vilshofen's charm lies in its unhurried, authentically Bavarian atmosphere. The Marienplatz (main square) is bordered by family-run bakeries, traditional Gasthäuser (inns), and a Gothic parish church whose clock tower chimes mark the rhythm of daily life. The confluence of the three smaller rivers with the Danube — visible from the Vils Bridge — creates picturesque waterscapes that change character with the seasons. The town serves as a gateway to the Bavarian Forest (Bayerischer Wald), Germany's first national park, whose dense woodlands of spruce, beech, and fir stretch along the Czech border in one of Central Europe's last great wilderness areas.

Bavarian cuisine in Vilshofen adheres faithfully to tradition. Schweinebraten (roast pork) with Knödel (bread or potato dumplings) and dark beer gravy is the archetypal Sunday dinner. Weisswurst, the white veal sausage that must traditionally be eaten before noon, is accompanied by sweet mustard and a fresh pretzel. Dampfnudeln — steamed dumplings served with vanilla sauce — are a beloved Bavarian dessert. The region's beers follow the Reinheitsgebot (purity law) of 1516, and Vilshofen's proximity to Passau means access to the breweries of the Bayerischer Wald, including Aldersbach, a monastery brewery operating since 1268. A visit to a traditional Biergarten on a warm evening, beneath chestnut trees with a Mass (litre) of Helles, needs no embellishment.

Excursions from Vilshofen explore the cultural and natural wealth of Lower Bavaria. Passau, the stunning "City of Three Rivers" where the Danube, Inn, and Ilz converge, lies just twenty minutes downstream — its Italian baroque old town, crowned by the largest cathedral organ outside a concert hall, is unmissable. The Bavarian Forest offers hiking, cycling, and the Baumwipfelpfad (tree-top walkway) at Neuschönau, which culminates in a wooden tower offering 360-degree views of the forest canopy. Regensburg, a UNESCO World Heritage city with the oldest stone bridge in Germany and a beautifully preserved medieval centre, is ninety minutes northwest.

Vilshofen serves as an embarkation and disembarkation point for Danube river cruises operated by AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Celebrity Cruises, Scenic River Cruises, and Uniworld River Cruises. Nearby river ports include Passau, Linz, and Regensburg. The Danube season extends from April through October, with September and October offering harvest festivals, autumnal colours, and the beginning of the cosy Bavarian Gemütlichkeit that defines the region's appeal.
