Martinique

Grande Anse, Les Anses-d'Arlet

Tucked into the southwestern coast of Martinique, where the Caribbean's volcanic origins reveal themselves in dramatic cliff faces plunging into turquoise waters, Grande Anse lies within the commune of Les Anses-d'Arlet — a stretch of coastline so perfectly realized it seems almost implausible. This corner of the French Caribbean has remained largely untouched by the resort development that has transformed much of the region, preserving instead a character that is authentically Martiniquais: fishing pirogues pulled up on golden sand, Creole cottages painted in faded pastels, and a quality of light that turns the sea into liquid sapphire.

The beach at Grande Anse is consistently ranked among the finest in Martinique, a sweeping crescent of pale sand backed by coconut palms and sea grape trees. Unlike the more developed beaches of the island's southern tip, Grande Anse retains a quieter, more local atmosphere — families gather under the shade trees on weekends, fishermen mend their nets at the waterside, and the only soundtrack is the gentle percussion of wavelets on sand. The water here is exceptionally clear and calm, sheltered by the curve of the bay, making it ideal for swimming and snorkeling directly from the shore. Sea turtles are frequent visitors to these waters, gliding through the shallows with an elegance that never fails to enchant.

The gastronomic culture of Grande Anse and Les Anses-d'Arlet reflects Martinique's unique position as a French overseas department with deep Caribbean and African roots. Beachside restaurants — some little more than a few tables under a corrugated roof — serve accras de morue (salt cod fritters), court-bouillon de poisson (fish in spiced Creole sauce), and colombo de poulet (a curry-spiced chicken dish reflecting the island's Indian heritage). Ti' punch, the iconic Martiniquais cocktail of rhum agricole, lime, and cane syrup, is served everywhere and consumed at every hour. The rum itself is a point of pride: Martinique holds the only AOC designation for rum in the world, and the distilleries along the Route du Rhum produce spirits of remarkable refinement.

Beyond the beach, the hills above Grande Anse offer hiking trails through tropical forest with views that sweep across the Caribbean to the neighboring island of Saint Lucia. The nearby village of Les Anses-d'Arlet, with its photogenic church standing directly on the waterfront and its colorful fishing pier, has become one of the most photographed scenes in the French Caribbean. Snorkeling at Anse Dufour, a smaller cove just north, offers near-guaranteed encounters with hawksbill turtles, while a boat excursion to the submerged volcanic rock formations of Rocher du Diamant reveals the dramatic geological forces that shaped this coastline.

Grande Anse is accessible from Fort-de-France, Martinique's capital and primary cruise port, via a scenic 40-minute drive along the coastal road. The beach has basic facilities — a few restaurants, restrooms, and limited parking — which is part of its charm. The dry season from December through May offers the most reliable weather, with February to April being particularly idyllic. Visitors should bring snorkeling gear, as the underwater visibility is often exceptional. For those seeking the Caribbean at its most authentic — French sophistication meets tropical languor — Grande Anse delivers an experience that no manicured resort beach can replicate.
