Funchal

Funchal, the sun-blessed capital of Madeira, owes its name to the wild fennel — funcho in Portuguese — that the first Portuguese settlers found blanketing the bay's slopes when they arrived in 1419. João Gonçalves Zarco claimed this volcanic island for Prince Henry the Navigator, and within decades Madeira had become a vital waystation on the Age of Discovery trade routes, its fortified wine prized by the courts of Europe. Christopher Columbus himself lived briefly on Madeira, marrying the daughter of the island's governor before setting out to cross the Atlantic.

The city rises dramatically from a crescent-shaped harbour up terraced hillsides of tropical abundance. Bougainvillea cascades over whitewashed walls, jacaranda trees explode in violet blooms each spring, and the Jardim Botânico shelters over 2,000 exotic plant species collected from Portugal's former colonies across three continents. The cobblestone streets of the Zona Velha — the old town — have been transformed into an open-air gallery, each doorway painted by a different artist in the celebrated "Art of Open Doors" project. Above it all, the twin-towered Sé Cathedral, built in the late fifteenth century with a Mudéjar-influenced carved wooden ceiling of Moorish intricacy, remains the city's architectural crown.

Madeira's cuisine is an island feast of remarkable depth. Espetada, chunks of beef marinated in garlic and bay leaf then grilled on laurel-wood skewers, is the island's signature dish, traditionally hung from hooks above the table. Black-scabbard fish, hauled up from ocean depths exceeding a thousand metres, is served fried with banana — an unlikely combination that has become a beloved classic. The Mercado dos Lavradores, a vibrant Art Deco marketplace, overflows with passion fruit, custard apples, and the exotic monstera deliciosa fruit found nowhere else. And of course, Madeira wine — from dry Sercial to rich Malmsey — provides the perfect accompaniment, as it has for over five centuries.

The island beyond Funchal is a hiker's paradise. The levada walks — trails following centuries-old irrigation channels through laurel forests designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site — offer gentle rambles through cloud forests dripping with ferns and mosses. The vertiginous Cabo Girão, one of Europe's highest sea cliffs at 580 metres, features a glass-floored skywalk with views that induce both wonder and vertigo. The mountainous interior peaks at Pico do Arieiro (1,818 metres), connected to Pico Ruivo by a spectacular ridge walk above the clouds.
