Founded in 1521 by Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León, San Juan is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in United States territory and the second-oldest European-established capital city in the Americas, after Santo Domingo. The massive fortifications of El Morro and San Cristóbal, built over centuries to defend the harbor from English, Dutch, and pirate assaults, stand today as UNESCO World Heritage Sites — their twenty-foot-thick walls and sentry boxes (garitas) among the most iconic images in the Caribbean.

Old San Juan is a chromatic marvel: a grid of blue cobblestone streets lined with candy-colored colonial buildings sporting ornate iron balconies draped in bougainvillea. The neighborhood of Santurce has reinvented itself as the island's creative epicenter, with murals spanning entire building facades, contemporary galleries, and a culinary scene that earned San Juan recognition as one of the Caribbean's foremost food cities. The Condado and Isla Verde beach districts provide a sleek cosmopolitan counterpoint, their high-rise hotels facing turquoise waters where surfers ride Atlantic swells.

Puerto Rican cuisine — a vibrant fusion of Taíno, Spanish, and African influences — demands exploration. Mofongo, the island's culinary crown jewel, is a mound of fried green plantains mashed with garlic and chicharrón, typically filled with shrimp or stewed chicken. Lechón asado, whole spit-roasted pig cooked over charcoal for hours, is best savored at the open-air kiosks along the Ruta del Lechón in Guavate, about forty-five minutes from the city. In Old San Juan, mallorcas — sweet, powdered-sugar-dusted bread rolls filled with ham and cheese — pair perfectly with a café con leche. For cocktails, the piña colada was invented here in 1954 at the Caribe Hilton.

From the cruise port, El Yunque National Forest — the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System — lies just forty-five minutes east, its cascading waterfalls and cloud-shrouded peaks accessible via well-marked trails. The bioluminescent bays of Vieques and Fajardo, where microscopic dinoflagellates light up the water in an electric blue glow, rank among the brightest in the world. The charming town of Ponce, known as "La Perla del Sur," is a ninety-minute drive south and boasts a stunning collection of Creole and Art Deco architecture surrounding a lion-fountain plaza.

San Juan is one of the Caribbean's busiest cruise ports and a major embarkation hub. Crystal Cruises, Explora Journeys, Seabourn, Silversea, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, and Windstar Cruises provide ultra-luxury sailings. Azamara, Cunard, Holland America Line, Oceania Cruises, and Viking offer premium voyaging, while Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, and Disney Cruise Line serve the mainstream market. Emerald Yacht Cruises, Virgin Voyages, Marella Cruises, and TUI Cruises Mein Schiff round out an extraordinarily diverse roster. The cruise season runs November through April, though San Juan's tropical warmth makes year-round visits viable.
