Oudtshoorn lies in the Klein Karoo, a semi-arid valley between the Swartberg and Outeniqua mountain ranges in South Africa's Western Cape—a landscape of dramatic contrasts where fertile river valleys are hemmed by red-rock cliffs and dry scrubland. The town earned its fortune and its flamboyant character from an unlikely source: ostrich feathers. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when ostrich plumes adorned the hats and boas of fashionable women from London to New York, Oudtshoorn was the ostrich capital of the world, and the "feather barons" who controlled the trade built extravagant sandstone mansions—"feather palaces"—that remain the town's most distinctive architectural legacy.

The ostrich industry survives today, transformed from fashion into tourism and gourmet food. Several ostrich farms welcome visitors for tours that include the surreal experience of watching these two-meter-tall birds—the largest living birds on Earth—run at speeds up to seventy kilometers per hour, and the opportunity (for the brave) to sit on an ostrich's back. Ostrich products permeate the local market: ostrich biltong (dried meat), ostrich leather goods, and the enormous eggs that, when hollowed and painted, become distinctive decorative objects. The CP Nel Museum in the town center chronicles the boom-and-bust history of the feather trade with exhibits that capture the extravagance of an era when a single pound of prime feathers sold for more than a pound of gold.

The cuisine of Oudtshoorn is defined by its two signature ingredients: ostrich and the produce of the Klein Karoo. Ostrich steak—lean, red, and remarkably similar to premium beef in flavor—is the local specialty, served grilled with a reduction of local port wine or with dried fruit chutney. Ostrich carpaccio, ostrich burgers, and ostrich eggs (one egg makes an omelet for twelve) appear on menus across the town. The Klein Karoo's warm climate produces excellent fruit—apricots, figs, and table grapes—and the region has developed a growing wine and brandy industry. Boplaas and Grundheim are among the estates producing port-style wines, brandy, and muscadel that have won national recognition. The Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (National Arts Festival), held annually in March, transforms Oudtshoorn into a cultural destination with performances, exhibitions, and—of course—outstanding food.

The Cango Caves, twenty-nine kilometers north of town, are Oudtshoorn's greatest natural attraction. This system of limestone caverns extends over four kilometers into the Swartberg Mountains, with chambers of stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone formations illuminated to reveal a subterranean world of extraordinary beauty. The Heritage Tour follows a comfortable route through the largest chambers; the Adventure Tour requires crawling through narrow passages and climbing through chimney-like formations—a physically demanding but thrilling experience. The Swartberg Pass, a gravel road that climbs 1,585 meters through the Swartberg Mountains to the north, was built by the great road engineer Thomas Bain in the 1880s and remains one of the most spectacular mountain passes in South Africa—a masterwork of dry-stone construction that zigzags through fynbos and rock formations of remarkable beauty.

Oudtshoorn is located on Route 62, South Africa's scenic inland alternative to the Garden Route coastal highway, and is accessible from George (one hour) and Cape Town (four and a half hours). The best time to visit is September through May, with spring (September–November) bringing wildflowers to the Klein Karoo and comfortable temperatures. Summer (December–February) is hot but dry—ideal for the caves and mountain passes. The Klein Karoo Kunstefees in late March combines cultural programming with the last warmth of autumn.
