The ancient city of Ephesus, one of the greatest metropolises of the Greco-Roman world, lies just seventeen kilometres from the cruise port of Kuşadası — and it is this proximity to antiquity that has made this otherwise modest Aegean resort town one of the eastern Mediterranean's most visited ports of call. Ephesus was home to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and served as the Roman capital of Asia Minor, with a population that may have reached a quarter of a million. The Apostle Paul preached here; the Virgin Mary, by tradition, spent her final years in a modest stone house on a nearby hillside.

Kuşadası itself — whose name translates to "Bird Island," after the small fortified islet connected to the mainland by a causeway — has evolved from a fishing village into a lively resort town that retains pockets of Turkish authenticity amid its tourist-oriented waterfront. The old quarter, centred on the seventeenth-century Kaleici Camii mosque and a restored caravanserai that now serves as a boutique hotel, reveals narrow lanes filled with carpet shops, leather workshops, and tea gardens where men play backgammon over tulip-shaped glasses of çay. The harbour promenade comes alive at sunset, when families stroll past ice cream vendors performing the theatrical Turkish dondurma ritual — stretching, twirling, and teasing the sticky mastic-infused treat.

Turkish Aegean cuisine is a celebration of olive oil, fresh seafood, and garden produce. Begin with a meze spread: haydari (thick yoghurt with herbs and garlic), acılı ezme (spicy tomato-walnut paste), and midye dolma (mussels stuffed with spiced rice and pine nuts). Grilled octopus, drizzled with lemon and olive oil, and levrek (sea bass) baked in salt crust are coastal staples. For something uniquely local, seek out çöp şiş — tiny skewers of marinated lamb grilled over charcoal — at a neighbourhood lokanta. Complete the meal with künefe, a dessert of shredded filo layered with melted cheese, soaked in syrup, and finished with crushed pistachios, or a simple plate of seasonal fruit — figs, peaches, and watermelon in summer — served with kaymak (clotted cream).

Beyond Ephesus, excursions from Kuşadası reach deep into Aegean Turkey's archaeological riches. The terraced white travertine pools of Pamukkale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, lie three hours inland, often combined with the ruins of the ancient spa city of Hierapolis. The hilltop Temple of Apollo at Didyma, with its forest of massive columns, and the ancient city of Miletus, where Thales laid the foundations of Western philosophy, are each within an hour's drive. Closer to port, the Dilek Peninsula National Park offers pine-forested hiking trails and secluded pebble beaches washed by crystalline water.

Kuşadası ranks among Turkey's busiest cruise ports, receiving calls from AIDA, Celebrity Cruises, Celestyal Cruises, Cunard, Emerald Yacht Cruises, Explora Journeys, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Holland America Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Oceania Cruises, P&O Cruises, Ponant, Princess Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Scenic Ocean Cruises, Seabourn, Silversea, Star Clippers, Viking, Virgin Voyages, and Windstar Cruises. Nearby ports include the Greek islands of Samos and Patmos, as well as Istanbul, Bodrum, and Marmaris along the Turkish coast. The cruising season extends from April through November, with spring and autumn offering comfortable temperatures for exploring archaeological sites without the intense summer heat.
