The Inian Islands guard the entrance to Cross Sound at the junction of the Inside Passage and the open Gulf of Alaska, a cluster of small, rocky islets where the forces of ocean, current, and geography converge to create one of the richest marine ecosystems in Southeast Alaska. These islands, named for the Huna Tlingit word for a type of kelp, sit at the confluence of nutrient-rich waters pouring out of Glacier Bay and the cold, productive upwellings of the Gulf—a meeting that generates a biological abundance out of all proportion to the islands' modest size.

The character of the Inian Islands is defined by wildness. There are no settlements, no docks, no infrastructure of any kind—only granite rock, dense spruce forest, tide pools teeming with marine invertebrates, and a constant wind that carries the salt spray of the Gulf. The waters surrounding the islands are among the most dynamic in Southeast Alaska, with tidal currents that can exceed eight knots and create standing waves, whirlpools, and tide rips that churn the surface into a spectacle of white water. It is these currents that drive the ecosystem: the turbulence brings nutrients to the surface, feeding massive plankton blooms that attract fish, which in turn draw marine mammals and seabirds in extraordinary concentrations.

The wildlife at the Inian Islands is the primary draw, and encounters here rank among the finest in Alaska expedition cruising. Steller sea lions haul out on the rocks in colonies of hundreds, their barking and bellowing audible from a distance. Humpback whales congregate in the nutrient-rich waters, often engaging in bubble-net feeding—a cooperative hunting technique in which multiple whales work together to corral schools of herring by blowing a curtain of bubbles, then lunging through the trapped fish with mouths agape. This behavior, rarely observed elsewhere, occurs with remarkable regularity at the Inian Islands. Sea otters raft together in kelp beds, bald eagles circle overhead, and the tide pools reveal a miniature world of sea stars, anemones, and hermit crabs.

The surrounding waters and coastline extend the exploration. Cross Sound opens westward into the Gulf of Alaska, where the continental shelf drops rapidly and pelagic species—including albatross and shearwaters—can be spotted. To the east, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve offers a world of tidewater glaciers, whale watching, and the post-glacial landscapes that John Muir described so eloquently in the 1880s. The Icy Strait, connecting Cross Sound to Chatham Strait, is one of the premier whale-watching corridors in the world, with resident populations of humpbacks, orcas, and occasional gray whales.

The Inian Islands are visited exclusively by expedition vessels and Zodiac excursions, typically as part of Southeast Alaska or Glacier Bay itineraries. Landings are weather-dependent and subject to sea conditions, which can change rapidly at this exposed location. The visiting season runs from May through September, with June through August offering the best conditions and the peak of humpback whale activity. July and August see the highest concentrations of bubble-net feeding. All visits are conducted with strict wildlife viewing protocols to minimize disturbance to the sea lion colonies and feeding whales.
