Your shore excursions and Zodiac rides will be accompanied by countless natural wonders that will leave you speechless, but to see the bigger picture, you need to understand the background. Our new ships take your expedition to the next level with fascinating presentations in the HanseAtrium, personal studies in the Ocean Academy and the perfect equipment for the research trip of your life.

Draw on our experts’ wealth of knowledge during their daily presentations in the HanseAtrium, the new multifunctional lounge with state-of-the-art technology. Visit the lounge to prepare for upcoming excursions and shed more light on impressions gained (so-called precaps and recaps). Discuss your latest discoveries, enjoy fascinating, relaxed film evenings or listen to our experts’ enthralling travel reports. In the evening, the HanseAtrium is transformed into an atmospheric bar where you can see out the day and reflect on your experiences.

A spirit of adventure doesn’t need harbours. The 17 Zodiacs (expedition rubber boats) are often the only way to get ashore in remote regions. After boarding via the side gate of the ships, specially trained drivers will navigate you to remote shores - in small groups and without long waiting times. This is the only way to reach regions that have retained their original character. The Zodiacs glide between icebergs, land on remote tropical beaches or navigate you through narrow waterways. Once ashore, your adventure continues: hikes with expedition guides will invigorate your body and mind. Whether Nordic Walking, easy trekking tours or snowshoeing – many active experiences await you.
Our Zodiacs will take you to hidden places and areas that are difficult to access, take you on further where other ships have to turn back and enable you to go ashore in places that may otherwise seem impossible. Your experiences in these places will become unforgettable memories. Let the Zodiacs take you straight into your next adventure, such as into the network of tributaries on the Amazon, to idyllic beaches in the South Seas or in search of impressive glacial landscapes. Experienced experts will always be on hand to show you what to look out for. These experiences are part of all of our expedition cruises and are also included in the cruise price on selected EUROPA and EUROPA 2 cruises. See things up-close in far-flung places – and experience new worlds.

Surely the purest way to experience the sixth continent! Take the unique opportunity to pitch your tent in the endless ice. An intensive experience in the tradition of great pioneers. This activity is offered on selected expeditions with the HANSEATIC nature, the HANSEATIC inspiration and the HANSEATIC spirit.

Your experts will accompany the hikes and landings and draw your attention to details that often go unnoticed by an untrained eye. Snowshoe hiking in Antarctica is a very special experience. Not only will you enjoy spectacular views, you will gain deep insights into the wonders of our planet.

A steam sauna will pamper you with gentle heat before the fresh ocean breeze revitalises your body on the adjacent external deck. Thanks to its flexible canopy, the large pool area can be enjoyed whatever the weather – let your mind drift on the spacious Sun Deck or in the warm water of the pool!

Can I buy cigarettes and cigars on board?
A range of cigarette brands is available for you to purchase on board our ships. Depending on the cruising area, these may also be offered duty free.
On board our expedition ships HANSEATIC nature, HANSEATIC inspiration & HANSEATIC spirit, you will find a small selection of cigars.
Onboard language is German and English on selected bilingual cruises in 2025. As of 1st January 2026 all our cruises are conducted in German and English.
On board
On an expedition cruise, everything revolves around experiencing the natural and there is a sporty and elegant atmosphere of exploration. This is the motto in all our restaurants for evening dining. On special occasions (such as Christmas) and for welcome and farewell evenings, we recommend wearing a jacket. Please consider the following in our restaurants, bars and lounges:
Ashore
When you go ashore, you should wear comfortable and practical clothes to suit the particular cruising area. Sturdy, flat shoes are essential – both for on board the ship and when you are ashore. In order to protect yourself from spray when on board the Zodiac, please take waterproof trousers or overtrousers without Velcro if possible with you (especially for expeditions in the polar regions, we recommend avoiding clothing with Velcro as to ensure that flora and fauna are not carried into regions where they are not indigenous). A protective waterproof bag is useful for your smartphone/camera equipment. For routes in warm waters, please remember to bring enclosed, sturdy beach shoes or waterproof trekking sandals that allow you to walk well and safely. These are also essential for the Zodiacs.
Do you provide rubber boots?
On our expedition ships, rubber boots in sizes 33 to 52 are provided on a loan basis for wet landings in the Antarctic and Arctic. When cruising in the Arctic and Antarctic, please note that rubber boots must be washed in a rubber boots washer when leaving or boarding the ships.
Are parkas provided?
Depending on the cruising area, parkas are also provided on board the expedition ships for loan throughout the entire cruise. The parkas are available in American sizes S–XXXL and are not available for purchase.
